So why Handicaps?
The majority of races in the UK and Ireland are handicaps which in effect means handicapping various strength horses to put them on a level playing field.
That’s the theory anyway!
A horse’s rating dictates what weight they will carry in a particular event with each class of race having a rating limit.
Of course there are numerous circumstances where weight increase (or decrease for that matter) is misguided as it is only supplemented based upon recent form and it is this very factor that can lead bookmakers in the wrong direction.
